The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights, all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur, or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler’s armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.

Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident, yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatiana–and she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander’s impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protects–a secret as devastating as the war itself–as the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.

My Rating: + 5 stars!!

Dream Cast: The Bronze Horsemen Dream Cast

My thoughts:

Wow…I don’t think I’m going to be able to do this book justice but I will try but first I’ll explain my rating. Since this is one of the BEST book I have ever read, I’m giving it more than five stars!

This was the absolute most passionate, tragic, beautiful book that I have ever read! It took my breath away! The characters were just so, so incredibly real. I felt every single horrible, tragic moment and every blissful, loving one. I felt the heartbreak, the terror, the fear, and the impossible, beautiful love that the characters shared.

Tatiana and Alexander live in Leningrad, Soviet Russia during the German invasion. Tatiana is a young, beautiful, naïve girl and Alexander is a handsome soldier. The instant they meet, on the day that war is declared, their entire worlds change. That instant starts the battle in which they fight endlessly and desperately for their love. They fight family, hunger, death, longing and desire and even the Germans as their story progress along with the war they’re surrounded by.

This story was just filled and filled and filled with pain and sorrow and the only light in the whole story was the infinitely passionate love that Tania and Alexander had together. It literally conquered death, destruction, and despair in the God forsaken Soviet Russia. Tania was incredibly strong, relentless, loving and absolutely selfless. She gave her love to everyone no matter how horribly she was treated by them again and again. Most importantly she gave her heart and soul and would have happily given her life to Alexander. Alexander was caring, brave, strong, protective, and loving. He had the most beautiful heart and he gave it all to Tania with out question. Their love truly was beautiful!

Two things might turn you off about this book: it’s historical and it’s long. First, even though it is considered a historical romance it is definitely more romance. There is no history lesson or anything its just a different time period and place. There is no in depth explanations about the events and happenings of WWII and in Soviet Russia. The main focus is the romance. Now, about the length…yes this book is more than 800 pages but please, please don’t let that deter you from reading this novel. If anything, I became so immersed in this story that I felt like it was too short!

It took me a couple days to read this whole book and that was with staying up until the early hours of morning. This story will NEVER leave me. I will always remember this impossible heart wrenching and heart warming romance. After sobbing my eyes out, this book did end with a cliff but luckily there are two more books in this series and the second I’m done with this review I plan on starting the next one!
