Goodreads Summary:

Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

My Thoughts:

“Just breathe. Ten tiny breaths….
Seize them.
Feel them.
Love them.”

If one thing is for sure, it’s that this book was emotionally draining! I mean seriously, just when I thought the worst had already happened, it had my eyes bugging out of my head in utter shock! That being said, I loved it for every tiny breath I took while reading it!

Kacey is a damaged twenty year-old girl drowning in her pain, loss, anger, grief, and hatred. After a drunk driving accident took away her parents, boyfriend, and best friend, she doesn’t know how to cope besides keeping everyone at a distance. She bottles everything up and buries it deep, until she meets her new swoon-worthy neighbor Trent. He gets under skin like nobody ever has and so he digs deep and helps to pull her back into life.

The characters are without a doubt what made this book so awesome! All the characters weren’t what you expected them to be! Kacey made herself out to be a hard*** but was just an extremely troubled, sad girl trying to do right by her sister and herself. Trent helped her to feel and live again. He made it his goal to make Kacey smile and slowly she started becoming “Before Kacey.” No one had ever been able to breakdown the thick protective walls that she had built around her self, but Trent, with his dimples and sweet actions, managed it!

Then of course there was Storm and Mia, the Barbie look-alike Mother and daughter who came barging into Kacey and Livie’s lives that also worked their way into Kacey’s heart. My first impression of Storm was that I was going to really dislike her, but she easily became one of my favorite characters!

There was also a huge teddy bear bouncer, a typical player who turns out to be quite ambitious, a creepy-at-first-but-is-actually-really-awesome landlord, an unconventional doctor, a sweet police officer, an unexpectedly caring club owner, and a regretful young man. And every single one of these characters I didn’t expect to like, but boy was I ever wrong! I LOVED them all!

The plot of this story was flawless! The writing was captivating, and I feel that for such a complicated plot, Tucker did an amazingly clever job at making it all believable! The progression of Kacey and Trent’s relationship was impeccable and the huge, jaw-dropping pot twist was at the least expected moment! And the ending that followed wasn’t drawn out or hurried, but it was perfectly paced and was definitely satisfying! I loved it all and couldn’t put this book down!

This is a breathtaking book about loss, coping, love, and most importantly, forgiveness!
